Confucius (551–479 BCE), known in Chinese as Kongzi (孔子) or Kong Qiu, is the central teacher associated with the Analects and later Confucian tradition. Later tradition credited him with transmitting or editing classical learning, but those attributions should not be presented as settled authorship history. His teachings became central to later Confucian discussions of ren (仁), li (礼), and the cultivation of the junzi (君子).
