A boundary honestly marked is part of knowledge, not an embarrassment beside it. Confucius addresses a particular disciple and joins understanding to truthful declaration: do not enlarge a claim merely to appear certain. Saying what remains unknown creates room for inquiry while protecting other people from confidence that evidence cannot support.
The received chapter begins with a name: You, the personal name of the disciple better known as Zilu. Confucius is not offering a detached dictionary definition. He is addressing someone directly and asking whether he should teach him what it means to know. Restoring that address changes the tone from a polished maxim to a pointed lesson within a teacher-disciple relationship.
The sentence then repeats zhi, to know, in a tightly controlled pattern. What is known should be treated as known; what is not known should be treated as not known. The final phrase calls this very distinction knowing. Knowledge therefore includes an accurate account of its own limit, not only possession of an answer.
Traditional commentary associates the warning with Zilu's forceful temperament and a tendency to present not-knowing as knowing. That characterization belongs to commentary, not to the words of the chapter itself. The source does not stage a lie, describe shame, or diagnose a personal insecurity.
A modern reader can connect the saying with verification, expertise, and intellectual honesty. Its scope should remain proportionate. It is not a complete theory of knowledge, and repeating “I don't know” is not a virtue when evidence is available and inquiry is possible. The discipline lies in marking the present boundary accurately, then allowing that boundary to guide the next question rather than covering it with borrowed certainty.
