The Way Depends on Practice

Confucius said: People can broaden the Way; the Way does not broaden people.

A tradition or principle does not improve someone merely by being possessed, quoted, or named. The Way becomes broad through people who understand and enact it. This gives practice real agency without making the Way a private invention. The task is neither passive inheritance nor novelty for its own sake, but giving an ethical principle fuller reality in conduct.

Confucius arranges a reversal around the same verb. People can hong the Way; the Way does not hong people. Hong means to enlarge, extend, or make expansive. The symmetry places agency on the human side without saying that people create the Way from nothing or may redefine it however they please.

Traditional commentary says that the Way appears according to the capacity of the person who bears it: with greater ability it receives a fuller expression; with smaller ability it remains small. The formulation reflects a particular commentarial metaphysics, yet its practical force is clear. A principle, lineage, or teaching does not act merely because its name is present. It requires understanding, judgment, and conduct.

“Broadening the Way” is therefore different from making a tradition popular, adding personal innovations, or enlarging one’s influence. The passage does not say every generation must improve inherited teaching, that the Way shrinks without constant novelty, or that a person should use tradition as raw material for self-expression. Dao remains a normative path that can judge the practitioner as well as be carried by one.

For a modern reader, the sentence tests the distance between professed principle and lived form. Fairness becomes broader when procedures and decisions embody it; care becomes broader when it reaches an actual relationship. No slogan automatically makes its speaker fair or caring. A small practice is to choose one principle often named and give it one verifiable action. Human agency matters here not as ownership of the Way, but as responsibility for whether it becomes real in the world one touches.
