Unite Them with Purpose

The Way causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger.

The first of Sun Tzu's five factors concerns the bond that lets a people and their ruler act with a shared understanding. It includes purpose and political-moral legitimacy, not just neutral goal alignment. In a modern setting, the modest lesson is to make the purpose, costs, and authority of a collective undertaking explicit rather than assuming that compliance means genuine agreement.

Dao is the first of the five factors in the opening chapter. Here it is explained through the people and ruler sharing an intention strongly enough to face danger together. The phrase belongs to Warring States political and military thought; it is not the Daoist cosmic Way in a simple one-to-one sense, nor a generic management slogan. It carries a political and moral question: why would a population accept the burdens imposed by a ruler, and what kind of shared understanding makes coordinated action possible? The text describes a military state preparing for war, not a peaceful consensus circle. Its modern relevance is therefore limited but useful: collective action needs an intelligible purpose, a credible account of who bears its costs, and a way for affected people to question the undertaking. Alignment cannot be inferred from silence, and loyalty cannot be manufactured through grand language. Before asking for commitment, distinguish a common purpose from pressure to conform. Agreement should be sought, not manufactured; responsibility should remain visible even when a group acts together. The shared purpose in this passage is bound to a ruler's authority and a population's willingness to bear danger. It is not proof that leaders may demand sacrifice once they announce a mission. Modern collective work needs explicit consent, transparent costs, and a route for disagreement; unity is strongest when it can survive honest questions.
