The Five Fundamentals

The art of war is governed by five constant factors: the Moral Law, Heaven, Earth, the Commander, and Method and Discipline.

Before any significant undertaking, there are fundamentals you must assess. Sun Tzu names five: purpose, timing, context, leadership, and systems. Skip any one of these and you are building on sand. The discipline is not in the fighting — it is in the preparation. Master the fundamentals first.

Sun Tzu opens The Art of War not with combat but with calculation. The five factors form a complete framework for assessing any competitive situation. The Moral Law (dao) is not ethics in the modern sense but the shared purpose that unites a group. Heaven (tian) is timing and circumstance. Earth (di) is the specific terrain of your situation. The Commander (jiang) represents the qualities of leadership: wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage, and strictness. Method (fa) is the systems and processes that make execution possible. The general who prepares thoroughly rarely needs to fight desperately. The five factors are introduced as a method of weighing a campaign before it begins. Dao, Heaven, Earth, the commander, and method belong to a state at war, where morale, seasons, terrain, command, and organization interact. They are not a universal checklist that guarantees success. The value of the passage is its insistence that a plan has conditions. Before acting, ask which conditions are favorable, which are weak, and which cannot be changed. That assessment should make a decision more deliberate, not make uncertainty disappear. The five factors also prevent a narrow reading of strategy as clever tactics. A commander may have talent and still fail because the season, ground, purpose, or method is wrong. The modern echo is a precondition check: examine the whole setting, then decide whether the undertaking should begin at all.
