daily practice: one card each day, a private reflection, a personal Journey, offline reading, bilingual text, and more. iPhone only. No account required.

What the Oriens app is

The Oriens app is the daily companion to this website. The website is a quiet, open library: you come with a question — "What does wu wei mean?" — and leave with an answer you can read, follow, and trace across traditions. The app is the next step: it turns one idea into a daily practice. Each day you receive one card, one quiet moment of reading, and a prompt to leave your own reflection — then you can save and return to it in your personal Journey.

Oriens is not a renamed copy of the website and not a Stoicism-only app. It spans Tao, Confucian, Stoic, Buddhist, and seasonal content. It is a reading and reflection practice for anyone who wants to live with these ideas over time, rather than visit them once. It is not a therapy, counseling, course, or prediction service, and it makes no medical or guaranteed-outcome claims.

The daily card ritual: Today → Reflect → Save → Return

The entire app rests on one simple loop:

  1. Today — Each day the app draws one card for you: a passage, a translation, and original artwork. The daily draw is yours for that day — it is local, fixed for the local day, and cannot be rerolled.
  2. Reflect — Alongside the reading is a reflection prompt. You can write a note or, if you choose, dictate it. Reflection and notes are stored only on your device and are never synced to a server.
  3. Save — The reflections and moments you want to keep are collected in your personal Journey, where you can revisit them later.
  4. Return — An optional iOS Today widget and optional gentle notifications can bring you back to the practice. Nothing is forced: notifications are never requested at first launch, and there is no paywall on launch, on the daily draw, or in the middle of reading.

This is the core difference from the website: a web page helps you understand an idea; the app helps you practice it over time.

Website vs App

Website (oriens.top) Oriens App (iPhone)
Purpose An open library that answers a question A daily practice that repeats an idea
Cadence On demand, search-driven One card each day
Reading Guides, entities, cards, graph, glossary Curated daily card with artwork
Interaction Browse and read Read, reflect, save to Journey
Storage Server-published content Reads your saved reflections offline
Connection Needs internet (published pages) Offline-first; works from bundled content without an account or network
Language English (with localized alternates) Bilingual English + Simplified Chinese
Account Optional Not required at all
Privacy No ads, no cross-app tracking, on-device data

The two surfaces share the same content standard. The app does not replace the website: the website remains the best place to explore the library widely, search across traditions, and follow a question deeply. The app is the place to return to one idea, every day.
