Winter Solstice

Winter reaches its extreme. The sun is at its lowest, and the night is at its longest.

The winter solstice is the year's darkest day, yet it is celebrated as a festival of return. In Chinese tradition, this is when yang energy — light, warmth, life — begins its slow comeback. The calendar does not treat the darkest day as a tragedy. It treats it as a turning point. The wisdom here is simple: the moment of greatest darkness is also the moment when the light begins to return. You cannot have one without the other.

Dongzhi, the twenty-second solar term, occurs around December 21 to 23 when the sun reaches 270° of celestial longitude — the winter solstice. This is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Chinese calendar, Dongzhi is not only an astronomical marker but also a major festival, second in importance only to the Lunar New Year in some traditions. The three pentads describe earthworms curling up, elk antlers being shed, and underground springs beginning to stir. These earthworm and elk observations mirror the summer solstice pentads in reverse: where summer's peak saw deer antlers fall, winter's depth sees elk antlers fall. Beneath the surface, underground springs stirring is the most hopeful of the three — beneath the frozen surface, water is already beginning to move. Dongzhi festival has been observed for over two thousand years. Traditional customs include family gatherings, the eating of tangyuan (glutinous rice balls in sweet soup) in southern China, and dumplings in northern China. The round shape of tangyuan symbolizes reunion and completeness. The festival's deeper meaning is about the cyclical nature of time: the darkest day is not the end but the beginning of the return. That is not optimism — it is astronomy. The sun's path has reached its lowest point and must now ascend.
