Small Excess

Small matters are possible; great undertakings are not. The flying bird’s cry is heard as it passes, and descent is favored over ascent. The judgment narrows scale rather than condemning ambition forever. Modernly, reduce altitude: attend to details, lower exposure, and choose actions whose consequences you can carry. A modest step can be exacting and brave when conditions do not support a grand move.

The judgment grants success and favorable steadfastness, but sharply limits scope: small matters may be undertaken, not great ones. A flying bird leaves its cry; going upward is unfitting, going downward fitting, with great good fortune. Thunder over Mountain is the trigram structure. Later readers use the contrast between movement and a stopping height to elaborate the need for modest scale. The bird image belongs to the judgment itself, while broader moral lessons about humility arise from interpretation. The bird's cry is heard but not seen, a sound left behind as the creature passes; it marks presence without permanence.

For modern decisions, small should not mean trivial or inferior. It can mean bounded enough to understand, reversible enough to learn from, and proportionate to current capacity. A team facing uncertainty may run a pilot rather than launch everywhere. A person under strain may complete one necessary task instead of making a dramatic promise. Descent can mean reducing exposure, returning to basics, or listening from a less dominant position. The card does not prohibit future ambition. It advises against confusing altitude with fitness when the present conditions favor careful work close to the ground. Sometimes the most exacting action is the one scaled to what can actually be held, finished, and learned from before moving on.
