Inner Truth

The judgment names piglets and fish, good fortune, crossing the great river, and favorable steadfastness. The later Tuan Commentary explains this through sincerity reaching even piglets and fish; that interpretation should not be mistaken for the judgment’s literal wording. For modern life, inner truth is not magical persuasion. It is alignment among claim, evidence, conduct, and commitment—especially when cooperation must carry people across uncertainty.

The judgment reads: It does not itself say that sincerity reaches piglets and fish. That explanation appears in the later Tuan Commentary, which interprets the unusual animals as evidence of trust extending to unlikely recipients. Keeping those layers separate matters: the judgment supplies the compact image and divinatory conditions; the Commentary develops a theory of sincerity. Wind over Lake is the hexagram's trigram structure and supports later images of influence moving across a surface. The animal image grounds the text in a world where agricultural trust and ritual offerings were part of daily life, not a metaphor abstracted from it.

For a modern reader, inner truth should not become a promise that authenticity will persuade everyone. Trust also requires evidence, competence, boundaries, and time. Crossing a great river remains risky; sincerity does not remove current, distance, or weather. It can, however, make coordinated action more reliable because word, intention, and conduct are less divided. The practice is concrete: make fewer claims, keep visible commitments, correct errors early, and let consistency carry more weight than performance. Inner truth does not eliminate uncertainty; it gives others a reliable basis for joining you in it. The hexagram suggests that even modest sincerity can reach further than expected, but only when backed by the willingness to be corrected.
