Oppression

Hexagram 47 does not romanticize oppression or ask anyone to sacrifice their life to prove conviction. Its judgment holds together difficulty, steadiness, and the painful fact that words may not be believed. When credibility and resources are strained, principled action includes rest, evidence, allies, and protection. Endurance matters, but so does refusing conditions that are degrading, dangerous, or designed to silence you.

The judgment presents a compressed sequence: success; steadfastness; good fortune and no blame for a great person; words are not believed. The hexagram is often called Oppression or Exhaustion. Lake over Water is its trigram structure, and later image commentary describes a lake depleted of water. That image can illuminate scarcity, but it should not be used to praise deprivation. The text acknowledges a condition in which speech has lost persuasive force and character is tested under severe pressure.

For a modern reader, the first task is to separate integrity from self-destruction. Remaining principled does not require staying alone, accepting abuse, or staking one’s life on being proved right. When words are dismissed, practical supports matter: document what happened, seek credible allies, protect basic needs, rest, and choose forums where evidence can be heard. Sometimes speech should continue; sometimes safety requires withdrawal. The card’s mature form of endurance preserves judgment and dignity without turning oppression into a spiritual achievement. Steadfastness under oppression means maintaining the capacity for wise action, not merely surviving the storm. Endurance that sacrifices judgment has already lost what it tried to protect. The well of inner conviction can be carefully maintained even when external speech fails.
