Obstruction

Obstruction is information about conditions, not proof that you are weak or morally at fault. The judgment distinguishes favorable and unfavorable directions, recommends seeking a great person, and values steadiness. For a modern reader, that can mean changing approach, consulting someone with wider perspective, or refusing to force a blocked route. Persistence remains useful only when it stays responsive to reality.

The judgment names the southwest as favorable and the northeast as unfavorable, then advises seeing a great person and remaining steadfast. These directions belonged to the text's ancient divinatory and political world; they should not automatically be treated as literal compass instructions for every modern decision. The contrast between directions suggests that obstruction is not uniform: some paths remain open while others are blocked, and discernment matters.

Water over Mountain is the trigram structure: movement encounters a steep limit. The water wants to flow forward but meets stone. Later interpretation turns this configuration into an image of difficulty that cannot be solved by direct advance alone. The Image Commentary suggests that the inner reflective practice turns to faultfinding and correction. That ethical layer belongs to the tradition, not the judgment, which remains diagnostic rather than prescriptive.

The card's practical force is diagnostic. An obstruction may reveal poor timing, inadequate support, a route that has become unsafe, or a goal that needs revision. It does not prove personal failure, and it does not mean every barrier should be accepted. "Seeing a great person" can be read today as seeking qualified counsel, institutional help, or a perspective less trapped inside the problem. Steadfastness means staying aligned with what is right while remaining flexible about method. The wise response may be persistence, retreat, coalition, or redirection. Obstruction clarifies by limiting options; what remains after the narrowing is often what actually matters.
