Opposition does not require total reconciliation. The judgment grants good fortune in small matters, suggesting limited cooperation where larger agreement is unavailable. Difference can be managed through precise scope: identify what remains disputed, what can still be shared, and which boundaries prevent conflict from spreading. Respect does not require sameness, but coexistence needs rules, accurate listening, and protection against coercion or contempt.
The judgment says that good fortune is found in small matters. It neither promises complete harmony nor declares opposition inherently destructive. The title Kuí concerns divergence, estrangement, or the turning away of faces. This limited scale in the judgment is significant: when larger aims pull apart, workable action may survive in carefully bounded tasks. Opposition is not described as temporary, soluble, or regrettable; the text describes what remains possible within it.
Fire over Lake is the trigram structure, with the two elements tending in different directions. Fire rises; the lake reflects. In a polarized team, family, or civic setting, identify one factual question, practical task, or protective rule that does not require agreement on everything else. Record the disagreement honestly; do not manufacture unity or demand that a vulnerable party compromise safety. Small cooperation is valuable when it reduces harm and preserves communication. It becomes evasive if it conceals abuse or indefinitely postpones a decision that must be made. The hexagram does not ask whether opposition can be resolved; it asks what is still possible within it. Good fortune in small matters is not a consolation prize. It is a disciplined choice about where to direct limited energy when consensus is unavailable.
