Darkening of the Light favors steadfastness under difficulty. It does not require public disclosure when conditions are hostile, nor does it praise suffering for its own sake. Protecting truth may involve discretion, secure records, trusted allies, or temporary concealment. The central question is how to preserve moral and practical capacity without exposing yourself or others to needless harm. Survival and integrity can support one another.
The judgment says that steadfastness in difficulty is favorable. Its title, Míng Yí, evokes brightness injured, obscured, or darkened. The sentence does not demand dramatic witness, predict that hostile conditions will soon end, or identify suffering as morally purifying. It values the preservation of a right orientation when open expression may be costly. The favorability belongs to steadfastness, not to the darkness itself; the text does not ask anyone to remain in harm.
Earth over Fire is the trigram structure: brightness is covered by receptive ground. The fire still burns, but it is hidden beneath the surface. Later Image Commentary uses this configuration to discuss concealing brilliance while continuing to illuminate in a measured way. That counsel belongs to the interpretive tradition, not directly to the judgment. The historical context includes political exile and periods when frank speech carried fatal risk. The text emerged from a world where concealment could be survival, not cowardice.
In modern life, discretion can be responsible. A whistleblower may need documentation and legal advice before disclosure; a person in an unsafe household may need confidential support and a safety plan; unfinished work may need privacy before exposure. Concealment also has risks, so distinguish protective timing from silence that enables harm. The card asks how integrity can remain active under constraint—through records, allies, boundaries, and choices that preserve the possibility of safer action later. Steadfastness in difficulty does not mean enduring difficulty indefinitely. It means maintaining direction while the conditions for effective expression are assembled.
