Fire. Perseverance furthers. It brings success. Care of the cow brings good fortune.

Fire depends on what it burns. It cannot exist alone. The brightness that rises twice — fire clinging to fire — illuminates the four quarters of the world. But the judgment adds: care of the cow brings good fortune. The cow is gentle, nurturing, dependent. Even the brightest light needs something to sustain it. Clarity must be fed. Hexagram 30, Li (Fire), depicts Fire over Fire — brightness doubled, clarity upon clarity. But fire is unique among the elements: it cannot exist on its own. It must cling to fuel.
