Return is the turning point. Thunder still lies within the earth — the winter solstice, the darkest moment, when the light begins its return. The ancient kings closed the passes and rested. This is not inaction but the sacred pause at the moment of turning. After every ending, return. After every darkness, light. The way ebbs and flows, and the way is always returning.
Hexagram 24, Fu (Return), is one of the most philosophically significant hexagrams in the I Ching. Thunder within the Earth — the yang energy stirring at the deepest point of winter, the moment of solstice when light begins its return. The judgment is beautiful: going out and coming in without error, friends come without blame, on the seventh day comes return. The number seven represents the completion of a cycle.
