Something obstructs the way and must be removed. Thunder and lightning — the decisive force that cuts through what blocks the path. This is the hexagram of justice, of the hard decision that cannot be avoided. Not every problem can be solved gently. Some obstacles must be bitten through. The biting is not violence but precision — removing exactly what blocks the way, nothing more.

Hexagram 21, Shi He (Biting Through), presents the image of an obstacle between the teeth — something that must be bitten through to restore wholeness. The lower trigram is Thunder (decisive action) and the upper is Fire (clarity). Together they suggest the lightning strike of justice: swift, clear, and irreversible.
