— I Ching, Hexagram 19 (臨), 元亨利貞。至于八月有凶。

Approach has supreme success. Perseverance furthers. When the eighth month comes, there will be misfortune.

Approach is the moment before arrival. The earth rises to meet the lake — something is drawing near, and you can feel it. The superior person teaches without exhaustion and protects without limit. But the judgment contains a warning: the eighth month brings misfortune. Every approach has its season. What draws near will eventually recede. The wisdom is to be fully present for the approach without clinging to it.

Hexagram 19, Lin (Approach), depicts Earth above Lake — the receptive drawing near to the joyful. It is one of the most auspicious hexagrams, associated with the approach of spring after winter, of the great person to the people, of opportunity to the prepared. The image of the superior person who teaches inexhaustibly and protects without limit suggests leadership that is generous rather than controlling. The warning about the eighth month is a reminder that every approach contains the seed of its own departure. The I Ching describes the present moment with such precision that the next natural movement becomes visible. Understanding the pattern you are in is the first step toward wise action.
