Modesty

Modesty creates success. The superior person carries things through to completion.

The mountain should tower over the earth. Instead, it lies within it. This is modesty — not pretending to be small, but placing your greatness in service of something larger. The superior person reduces what is too much and increases what is too little, weighing things and making them equal.

Hexagram 15, Qian (Modesty), is unique in the I Ching: every line is auspicious. The mountain (greatness) lies beneath the earth (humility). This is not false modesty but genuine recognition that even the highest achievement exists within a larger context. The superior person reduces excess and increases deficiency, creating balance.
