— I Ching, Hexagram 11 (泰), 小往大來,吉亨。

Peace. The small departs, the great approaches. Good fortune. Success.

Peace is not the absence of conflict but the alignment of forces that were previously opposed. Heaven and earth, normally in tension, have found a moment of harmony. The small recede and the great advance. This is not permanent — no hexagram is — but it is real while it lasts. The task is not to cling to peace but to use it well before the alignment shifts again.

Hexagram 11, Tai (Peace), is one of the most auspicious hexagrams. The lower trigram is Heaven and the upper is Earth — the natural order inverted so their energies mingle and produce harmony. The image is of the ruler who completes the course of heaven and earth, furthering the gifts of nature to aid the people. But peace is a moment, not a permanent state, and the wise person uses it while it lasts. This hexagram has been consulted by countless generations seeking to understand their moment in the flow of change. Its wisdom lies not in predicting outcomes but in revealing the pattern of forces at work, so that the person who consults it can act with awareness rather than reaction.
