Alliance: good fortune. If one consults the oracle anew: great and enduring constancy, no blame. The unsettled come; the late arriver meets misfortune.

— I Ching, Hexagram 8 (比), 比,吉。原筮,元永貞,无咎。不寧方來,後夫凶。

The translation field is an Oriens clean-room translation from the recorded Chinese judgment text. English titles and commentary are Oriens editorial material, distinct from the received text.

The judgment calls for a divination described as 原筮, alongside enduring constancy and attention to those who arrive late. It preserves a divinatory setting rather than merely advising people to “check commitment.” Oriens interpretation: modern groups can name a basis of belonging, timely consent, and reliable obligations. Joining late may carry costs, but urgency should never be used to bypass scrutiny.

The displayed judgment calls 比 fortunate, then names 原筮, great and enduring constancy, those who come while unsettled, and misfortune for the late arriver. 原筮 is not settled by this short excerpt alone. Our working translation reads it as consulting the oracle anew and records an originating or initial-divination explanation in the translation note. This approach does not conceal the uncertainty behind a smooth English phrase.

The trigram structure places Water above Earth. Water flows downward and finds its level; Earth receives and holds. Together they suggest a natural gathering, an alignment that occurs when conditions support union rather than when force compels it. Its name 比 means comparison, proximity, and alliance. In the Zhouyi context it often describes the bonds between a sovereign and those who rally to a just center. Those who are unsettled—not yet at peace—seek such alignment. A late arriver who misses the moment faces consequence, not because of arbitrary punishment but because the conditions that enable genuine union have shifted.

A group can be examined through its stated obligations, the conditions of entry, and whether consent can be meaningful under time pressure. This application does not turn the text into a command to join quickly. If a group demands secrecy, punishes questions, or asks for commitment before facts can be checked, urgency is a reason for care rather than proof of belonging. Enduring constancy names the quality that makes alliance real: not the heat of a first gathering, but the sustained fidelity to shared terms that allows trust to mature into something dependable.
