The translation field is an Oriens clean-room translation from the recorded Chinese judgment text. English titles and commentary are Oriens editorial material, distinct from the received text.
Creative capacity is strongest when it is directed, sustained, and answerable to reality. The judgment joins great success with favorable steadfastness; it does not promise that force alone will prevail. For a modern reader, the question is whether initiative has a worthy aim, enough discipline to mature, and the flexibility to respond when conditions change. Beginning well matters, but continuing well matters more.
The judgment consists of four compact terms: 元、亨、利、貞. Oriens renders them here as “great success; steadfastness is favorable,” while recognizing that later traditions developed these words into richer accounts of beginning, growth, benefit, and constancy. Those elaborations are interpretive history, not additional sentences in the judgment. The doubled Heaven trigram supplies the hexagram’s structure. Later commentaries associate its unceasing movement with vigorous self-renewal and exemplary action, but the core remains terse: a favorable outcome paired with a condition of constancy.
The semantic layers of the four terms reward attention. 元 carries force and origination; 亨 names smooth passage or unimpeded development; 利 suggests fitting benefit rather than mere advantage; 貞 holds constancy, correctness, and the willingness to be tested. Read together they trace a sequence from inception through maturation to durable form. The tradition that expands these into a seasonal cycle of birth, growth, harvest, and storage is illuminating commentary, not hidden meaning inside the judgment itself. Keeping the two levels distinct preserves the text’s economy while honoring the tradition that grew around it.
In modern use, this hexagram can clarify the ethics of initiative. Energy is not yet achievement, and confidence is not evidence that a plan fits its conditions. Creative strength becomes dependable when purpose, skill, timing, and correction work together. Start what genuinely merits effort; give it a form that others can understand; notice limits before they become damage. Steadfastness does not mean rigidly defending the first design. It means remaining faithful to the worthy aim while revising the method as reality answers back. The card supports responsible authorship, not domination or guaranteed success.
