The Usefulness of Emptiness

Thirty spokes share one hub. It is the empty center that makes the wheel useful. The tangible provides benefit; the intangible provides function.

Three images, one truth. A wheel works because of its empty hub. A bowl holds because of its hollow center. A room shelters because of its empty space. We spend our lives chasing the tangible — the spokes, the clay, the walls — but the usefulness is always in the emptiness. What you leave out is often more important than what you put in.

Chapter 11 of the Tao Te Ching presents the usefulness of emptiness. Thirty spokes share one hub. It is the empty center that makes the wheel useful. The tangible provides benefit; the intangible provides function. Chapter 11 is the most accessible illustration of “you and wu” — being and non-being — in the entire text. The chapter uses three everyday objects: a wheel, a vessel, and a house. In each case, the tangible material (spokes, clay, walls) is acknowledged as benefit, but the intangible emptiness (hub, hollow, space) is identified as usefulness. The chapter is not a rejection of material things; it is a reminder that every object’s function depends on the emptiness it contains. Three images, one truth.
