Embrace the One

Can you hold body and soul in oneness and not let them separate? Can you concentrate your breath until it becomes soft like an infant's?

Most of us walk through the day split — body in one place, mind in another. The Tao asks a radical question: can you gather all of yourself into one point, right now, without anything leaking away? The infant who has not yet learned to divide attention is the model. Wholeness, not productivity, is the goal.

Chapter 10 of the Tao Te Ching presents embrace the one. Can you hold body and soul in oneness and not let them separate? Can you concentrate your breath until it becomes soft like an infant's? This chapter takes the form of six rhetorical questions about inner cultivation, each probing a different dimension of self-mastery. “Embracing the One” refers to unifying body and spirit, intention and action — a state the text treats as achievable rather than metaphorical. The infant comparison is deliberate: an infant has not yet divided attention across competing desires, social performances, or past regrets. Other questions in the chapter ask about cleansing the inner vision, loving the people without using knowledge, and opening and closing the gates of heaven while keeping to the feminine.
