Major cold arrives. The freeze reaches its depth, but spring waits on the other side.

Major Cold is the last of the twenty-four terms, and it holds a special position. It is the coldest term in name, yet it is also the threshold of spring. The calendar places the deepest freeze immediately before the new year's beginning. This is not a coincidence. It is a statement about how cycles work: the end of one thing is always the beginning of another. The cold is real, but it is also temporary. What feels like an ending is actually a transition. The wheel does not stop. It only turns.

Dahan, the twenty-fourth and final solar term, occurs around January 20 to 21 when the sun reaches 300° of celestial longitude. Its name intensifies Xiaohan (Minor Cold): 大 (dà) means "major" and 寒 (hán) means "cold." This is traditionally considered the coldest period of the year, though in practice Xiaohan is often colder in northern China. This term's significance is less about precise temperature and more about its position as the final term of the annual cycle. These three pentads describe hens beginning to hatch eggs, birds of prey hunting with intensity, and the waters of lakes and rivers freezing solid at their centers. Hatching eggs is the most hopeful observation: even in the deepest cold, new life is being prepared. Frozen waters at the center of lakes represent the maximum extent of winter's power — from this point, the ice can only recede. In cultural terms, Dahan is the final preparation period before the Lunar New Year. Families clean their homes, prepare special foods, and settle debts — a practice of closing the old year completely before opening the new. The term's position as the last of the twenty-four gives it a reflective quality: the full cycle has been completed, and the wheel is about to begin again. Its wisdom is the wisdom of completion — knowing when a season has run its course and being ready for what comes next.
