Major snow arrives. The flakes fall thick and heavy, and the land is covered in white.
Major Snow is the season's full arrival. The ground disappears. The sounds are muffled. The world simplifies itself into a single color. There is a peace in this that the busier seasons cannot offer. The calendar does not present winter as a problem to be solved. It presents it as a condition to accept. When the snow is deep enough, you stop fighting it. You stay inside. You wait. You let the world rest, and you rest with it.
Daxue, the twenty-first solar term, occurs around December 7 to 8 when the sun reaches 255° of celestial longitude. Its name intensifies Xiaoxue (Minor Snow): 大 (dà) means "major" and 雪 (xuě) means "snow." This is the period of heavy snowfall across northern China, when the landscape is transformed into a monochrome world of white and gray. Three pentads describe the cold bird (a mythical creature) ceasing to sing, tigers beginning to mate, and the winter plant liting (荔挺) emerging. The tiger's mating season in winter reflects the traditional Chinese belief that yang energy, though at its lowest ebb, is already beginning its return — the tigers sense this before humans can. The liting plant's emergence through the snow is a similar symbol: life persists even in the harshest conditions. In agricultural terms, Daxue is a period of true dormancy. The fields are frozen, the livestock are sheltered, and the farming community turns inward. This is the season of indoor work — tool repair, textile production, food preservation. In some regions, Daxue is associated with the custom of eating lamb hot pot, a warming communal meal that reflects the need for both physical and social warmth during the coldest weeks of the year.
