White Dew

White dew forms. The night air cools enough to condense, and the morning grass glistens.

White Dew is the most poetic of the solar terms. It names a phenomenon so delicate that you have to be awake at dawn to see it: the first condensation of autumn, tiny droplets on every blade of grass, vanishing as soon as the sun climbs high enough. The calendar asks us to notice what is fleeting. Not everything worth seeing lasts. Some beauty exists only at the threshold between night and day, between summer and autumn, between what was and what will be.

Bailu, the fifteenth solar term, occurs around September 7 to 9 when the sun reaches 165° of celestial longitude. Its name is literal and lyrical: 白 (bái) means "white" and 露 (lù) means "dew." It describes the morning dew that forms as autumn nights grow cooler, appearing white in the early light. This is the term when the seasonal shift becomes unmistakable — the air is crisp, the light is golden, and the humidity of summer has finally broken. The three pentads describe wild geese returning from the north, swallows flying south, and birds storing food for winter. The migration of birds is one of the most reliable seasonal markers across cultures, and the Chinese calendar uses it precisely. This geese and swallows do not consult a calendar; they respond to changes in light and temperature that humans can also learn to read. In some regions, Bailu is associated with the custom of drinking Bailu tea — tea leaves picked during this term, believed to have a particularly mellow character. In the tea-producing regions of Fujian and Taiwan, this is a celebrated seasonal practice. As with all seasonal customs, this reflects regional tradition rather than a universal practice. This term's deeper meaning is about attention: the dew is there every morning, but only those who look will see it.
