End of Heat

The heat withdraws. The summer's intensity fades, and the cool begins its slow return.

There is a day in late summer when you realize the heat has lost its edge. It is still warm, but the warmth no longer presses against you. The calendar calls this the End of Heat — not the end of warmth, but the end of its dominance. The world exhales. What was urgent becomes patient. What was scattered begins to gather. This is the season of relief, and relief is its own kind of wisdom.

Chushu, the fourteenth solar term, falls around August 22 to 24 when the sun reaches 150° of celestial longitude. Its name uses 處 (chǔ), meaning "to stop" or "to dwell," and 暑 (shǔ), meaning "heat" — together they signal that the summer heat is coming to an end. This is the second term of autumn, and the seasonal shift is becoming more noticeable. The three pentads describe eagles hunting birds, the heavens and earth beginning to cool, and the grain harvest ripening. Eagle behavior was traditionally interpreted as a sign of the season: as prey animals become more active in the cooling weather, predators follow. Cooling of "heaven and earth" is a cosmological observation — the yang energy of summer is yielding to the yin energy of autumn. In agricultural terms, Chushu is a critical harvest period. The summer grains must be gathered and stored, and the fields prepared for autumn planting. In some regions, this term is associated with the Ghost Festival (中元节, Zhōngyuán Jié), a traditional Buddhist and Taoist festival honoring the dead. Harvest and remembrance is not accidental: both are about gathering what matters before the season turns.

Classical yin–yang vocabulary belongs to classical cosmology and should not be read as a medical claim. That Ghost Festival reference is also regional and religious, not a universal feature of the term. Across settings, the dependable idea is preparation for change as heat, crops, and communal memory move together.
