Pure and bright. The sky is clear, and the earth is luminous with new growth.

Qingming is the only solar term that is also a major festival. Families visit ancestral graves, sweep the tombs, and offer food and paper money. But the day is not only about mourning. It is also about clarity — the sky after rain, the mind after grief, the landscape after winter. The Chinese name means both "clear" and "bright," and the festival holds both: remembrance and renewal, loss and the green insistence of spring.

Qingming, the fifth solar term, falls around April 4 to 6 when the sun reaches 15° of celestial longitude. It is unique among the twenty-four terms in being both an astronomical marker and a major cultural festival — Tomb-Sweeping Day — observed across China and in Chinese communities worldwide. This term's name, 清明, literally means "clear and bright," describing the fresh, luminous quality of spring air after the rains have passed. Three pentads describe the paulownia tree beginning to bloom, field voles transforming into quails (a folk observation), and rainbows appearing. This rainbow is particularly apt: Qingming sits at the intersection of grief and beauty, loss and renewal. The tomb-sweeping custom dates back over 2,500 years, with roots in ancestral veneration practices that predate the solar term system. Families clean gravesites, offer food and wine, burn incense and joss paper, and sometimes share a meal at the graveside. In contemporary practice, the festival has also become associated with spring outings (踏青, tàqīng), kite flying, and the eating of green rice balls (青团, qīngtuán). The dual nature of Qingming — mourning and celebration, death and spring — is not a contradiction but a recognition that both belong to a full life.
