Twice a year, the world finds balance. Day and night are equal, light and dark in perfect proportion. The spring equinox is the more hopeful of the two — it tips toward warmth, toward longer days, toward growth. But balance is not a permanent state. It is a moment to notice before the scale tips again. The calendar does not ask us to hold on to it. It asks us to notice it.
Chunfen, the fourth solar term, occurs around March 20 to 22 when the sun reaches 0° of celestial longitude — the vernal equinox. This is one of only two points in the year when day and night are approximately equal everywhere on Earth. In the Chinese calendar, Chunfen also marks the midpoint of spring, dividing the season into its ascending and descending halves. The three pentads describe swallows returning from the south, thunder beginning to sound, and lightning appearing. These are precise ecological observations that helped ancient communities track the season. The swallow, in particular, is a powerful symbol of return and fidelity in Chinese poetry and art. In some regions, Chunfen was associated with the custom of balancing eggs — a folk belief that eggs stand upright more easily on the equinox. While this has no scientific basis, it reflects a broader cultural intuition: the equinox is a moment of unusual equilibrium, a day when the world's opposing forces briefly find their center. The term invites reflection on balance not as a permanent achievement but as a recurring opportunity.
Equinox is an astronomical instant; local sunrise and sunset are not perfectly equal because of refraction and the Sun’s disc. Traditional egg-balancing games are cultural amusements, not evidence of a special physical force. The term joins precise celestial measurement with a human wish for balance.
