Awakening of Insects

The insects are startled awake. Spring thunder rolls, and the hibernating creatures stir from the earth.

Something has to break the silence. The calendar calls it thunder — the first spring storm that shakes the ground and wakes everything that has been sleeping through winter. But every life has its own version of this moment: the alarm that says the waiting is over, the signal that it is time to move. Not every awakening is gentle. Some arrive as a jolt.

Jingzhe, the third solar term, falls around March 5 to 7 when the sun reaches 345° of celestial longitude. Its name combines 驚 (jīng, "startle" or "frighten") and 蟄 (zhé, "hibernating creatures"), referring to the belief that spring thunder awakens insects and animals from winter dormancy. In agricultural terms, this is when farmers begin serious field preparation and pest control. The three pentads describe peach blossoms beginning to bloom, orioles singing, and eagles transforming into doves — the last being a folk observation rather than a biological claim. The peach blossom is particularly significant in Chinese culture, symbolizing spring, romance, and renewal. It appears in poetry from the Shijing (Book of Songs) onward. In some regions, Jingzhe was associated with the custom of eating pears, believed to moisten the lungs during the dry spring transition. As with all traditional dietary customs, this reflects cultural practice rather than medical advice. This term's deeper meaning is about the relationship between disturbance and growth: sometimes the ground must be shaken before anything can emerge.

Its “awakening” language belongs to an older phenological vocabulary. Temperature, soil, and species vary widely by latitude and altitude, so the named insects should be read as regional exemplars rather than a synchronized global event. The card preserves the observation while keeping the biology appropriately modest.
