Rain Water

Rain water arrives. The frozen earth receives moisture, and the rivers begin to flow again.

There is a moment in late winter when the snow stops falling as snow. It turns to rain — softer, warmer, more forgiving. The calendar names this transition Rain Water, and it carries a quiet wisdom: some changes announce themselves loudly, but the most important ones arrive as a shift in texture. What was hard becomes fluid. What was sealed begins to open.

Yushui, the second solar term, arrives around February 18 to 20 when the sun reaches 330° of celestial longitude. Its name is literal: precipitation shifts from snow to rain across much of northern China. This is not merely a weather observation but an agricultural signal — the soil is becoming workable, and the first round of fertilization and irrigation planning begins. The three pentads of this term describe otters offering fish (a traditional observation of otter behavior), wild geese returning north, and plants beginning to sprout. These are ecological markers that helped ancient communities track the season without instruments. In Chinese folk tradition, Yushui is associated with the custom of returning to one's parental home — married daughters would visit their birth families, bringing gifts. This custom varies by region and should not be taken as universal. The deeper pattern is one of reconnection and renewal, themes that resonate across the spring terms.

Rain Water is therefore a threshold in a lunisolar calendar, not a promise of rainfall at every location. In dry or tropical regions, people may notice different signs. The traditional image remains valuable as a record of how communities connected changing moisture, fieldwork, and the care of stored grain.
