Summary

I Ching Hexagram 51, 震 (Zhèn), represents The Arousing (Shock, Thunder).

SourceZhouyi (周易, The Book of Changes) — hexagram 51 (震 Zhèn). Chinese source: Chinese Text Project, based on 《武英殿十三經注疏》本《周易正義》 (ctp:book-of-changes/zhen). Judgment: received Zhouyi hexagram statement (卦辭). English: Translation by Oriens Editorial Translation. Image: Xiang / Image commentary layer (象傳), distinct from the Judgment and line texts. Image and line English: named translation by James Legge, The Yî King (1899), public-domain translation; online reproduction. The named translation is used for the Image and line statements only.

Oriens Editorial Translation: Success. Thunder comes—fear and trembling; then laughter and talk. Thunder startles a hundred li, yet the ladle and sacrificial wine are not lost.

2. Image (象 Xiàng / Xiang commentary)

James Legge: (The trigram representing) thunder, being repeated, forms Kan. The superior man, in accordance with this, is fearful and apprehensive, cultivates (his virtue), and examines (his faults).

3. Line Statements (爻辭 Yáocí)

Line 1 of 6 (from the bottom):
初九:震來虩虩,後笑言啞啞,吉。
James Legge: The first NINE, undivided, shows its subject, when the movement approaches, looking out and around with apprehension, and afterwards smiling and talking cheerfully. There will be good fortune.

Line 2 of 6 (from the bottom):
六二:震來厲,億喪貝,躋于九陵,勿逐,七日得。
James Legge: The second SIX, divided, shows its subject, when the movement approaches, in a position of peril. He judges it better to let go the articles (in his possession), and to ascend a very lofty height. There is no occasion for him to pursue after (the things he has let go); in seven days he will find them.

Line 3 of 6 (from the bottom):
六三:震蘇蘇,震行无眚。
James Legge: The third SIX, divided, shows its subject distraught amid the startling movements going on. If those movements excite him to (right) action, there will be no mistake.

Line 4 of 6 (from the bottom):
九四:震遂泥。
James Legge: The fourth NINE, undivided, shows its subject, amid the startling movements, supinely sinking (deeper) in the mud.

Line 5 of 6 (from the bottom):
六五:震往來厲,億无喪,有事。
James Legge: The fifth SIX, divided, shows its subject going and coming amidst the startling movements (of the time), and always in peril; but perhaps he will not incur loss, and find business (which he can accomplish).

Line 6 of 6 (from the bottom):
上六:震索索,視矍矍,征凶。震不于其躬,于其鄰,无咎。婚媾有言。
James Legge: The topmost SIX, divided, shows its subject, amidst the startling movements (of the time), in breathless dismay and looking round him with trembling apprehension. If he take action, there will be evil. If, while the startling movements have not reached his own person and his neighbourhood, (he were to take precautions), there would be no error, though his relatives might (still) speak against him.

4. Modern Interpretation (Oriens commentary)

This is an Oriens interpretation, not part of the Zhouyi text.

The Arousing can prompt a careful question about shock: what arrives suddenly here, and does it scatter attention or return it? Doubled thunder is the text's own picture of shock followed by shock — and of laughter returning when terror passes, held by one who keeps the sacrificial vessels in hand.

The Chinese source and translation provenance are identified above. The Judgment is an Oriens Editorial Translation; the Image and line statements are labeled with James Legge. This keeps the modern reflection separate from both the received text and the named translation.

Composure after startle is described rather than promised. Nothing predicts shocks or outcomes.
